I’m feeling not quite right today,
But what it is, I can’t quite say.
I need a drug to calm me down.
Something to help me lift my frown.

An ad was running on TV
About this drug – sounds good to me.
Don’t need a Doc, it’s OTC.
I bought it at the pharmacy.

I paid a lot for some white pills.
Just add it to my other bills.
They tasted bitter, made me shake.
I hope they’re good and not a fake.

Next day my mood had shifted some,
No longer weird, but kind of numb.
I couldn’t focus on my work,
Hardly seeing through the murk.

I watched TV again that night,
So many drug ads – that’s not right.
The ‘conomy was on the news,
The Drug CO’s profits were quite huge.

At work my friends all take their tabs
Straight from Big Pharmas wonder labs.
They’re proud of it and even brag
But when it’s my turn – I just gag!

We need to get a grip somehow,
Maybe I’ll skip the drugs for now.
There’s more to life than chemistry.
Which hinders efforts to be free!

Our Doctors have way too much say,
More like drug salesmen half the day.
We most assume they’re always right,
Do all they say without a fight.

But something seems real odd I think,
If you can make the mental link.
The hospitals are brimming full
With many ills ‘incurable’!

I thought back to my childhood days,
A better world in many ways.
TV had hardly started then
And children wrote with ink and pen.

We climbed and wandered in the hills
And never thought of taking pills.
We drank fresh water from the stream.
A beer can I had never seen!

It’s hard to spot just when things changed.
Somehow our lives got re-arranged.
Was it the War, the fascist psyches
Or madmen leaders and their likes?

I see it now, we’re off the rails
Believing manufactured ails.
But man’s a spirit, not just meat,
Which drugs are not the way to treat.
