How to Break Up with Your TV

Spring is here!

Days are longer. Nights are shorter. You're falling in love with all things outdoors.

And you know what that means.

It means it's the perfect time to break up with your television!

C'mon. You've noticed it. That spark that was there on those dark cold winter nights is missing now. The
relationship has gone stale.

You know it. Your dog knows it. Your TV knows it.

It's time to call it quits.

Here's why:

· You'll be more productive.

Americans watch an average of 4.5 hours of television per day. That's 135 hours a month! Do you know how
many books you can write, businesses you can start, dreams you can fulfill in 135 hours? (And people tell me
they don't have time to be creative. Hmmm.)

· You'll be more aware.

Even though you might feel like you're just relaxing in front of the tube - you're actually slipping out of the
present-moment. Eckhart Tolle said this about TV: "While it provides some relief from your mind, you pay a
high price: loss of consciousness."

· You'll be more creative.

We are each meant to create. Images, dreams, ideas, and art. Television tosses all of that stuff into your head
for you -- training you to dismiss your own visions for someone else's. (And usually, that someone is not too
concerned about your well-being.)

So...

More productivity, higher awareness, and enhanced creativity. Inspiring outcomes?

Yes?

Well, then it might be time to let your TV know you want to start seeing other people.

Here are seven ideas for how to break up with your TV:

1 - Acknowledge your pattern.

When are you most inclined to grab the remote and plunk down in front of the tube? After dinner? While you're
eating? Do you turn it on the minute you get home and leave it on all night?

Awareness is the first key. Observe yourself and recognize that your television patterns are just habits. Tell
yourself that new habits can be created.

2 - Allow a transition moment.

Do you rush in the door from your work-day and launch into the next activity? (And the next and the next?) Then
try allowing a transition moment.

A transition moment is a mini meditation. Before you shift gears out of your work-day, sit quietly and move into
the next phase of the day. You'll be amazed at the clarity you create.

3 - Use Intention

One of the activities in my Uplevel Your Life Mastery Program is to use intention before every activity in your
day. It's like telling yourself: "This is what I want for this next time period. I want it, and I expect it." It prevents
living reactively.

Before you begin your evening, set an intention. "I intend to relax, to really taste my food, and to listen to my
kids." Setting intention is a powerful start to any activity.

4 - Make a list

Make a list of fun non-TV activities. Use this list as a resource to remind you not to grab the remote!

Here are a few ideas to jump-start your list:

Weed the garden.

Listen to music.

Write.

Get out the bird feather-fishing pole, and play with your cats.
Join a 6pm yoga class.

Meet a friend at a coffee shop.

Practice piano.

Listen to an audiobook.

5 - Create ritual.

Several years ago, I was trying to quit eating sugar after dinner. (Getting rid of TV sent me straight to the
chocolate chip cookie habit.)

My acupuncturist told me, "It's all about ritual. Create a new one."

She suggested cutting an apple into slices and sprinkling cinnamon on them for my dessert. It took some time,
but this ritual worked.

What small ritual could you add to your evening to bring in some kind of value or authenticity?

6 - Start small.

If breaking up with your TV is a big deal, then start small. Maybe just go for "Trial Break-Up Tuesdays." Every
Tuesday night, try something different. When you get a little more comfortable with it, then expand to Tuesdays
and Thursdays. Keep adding days as you get better at it.

7 - Make a fast clean break

Get rid of your TV altogether. Call the cable company. Turn it off. Have a party with friends to celebrate. Go all
out. Commit to it.
