Grace Sylke
The Drum
Dedicated to Chuck Grey Wolf  who says, “Follow The Good Red Road”
Grace Sylke

As I
dodge
traffic
on the
Canyon Road,
I feel
the weight
of it
on my
back,
a gentle
load.
I hear
its low
resonance
bounce
against
my bones--
bones of
remembering
a distant
past.

I’ve made
a complete
circle.
I’m going
home
at last.

It is
secured
there
with the
tie
from my
cobalt blue
robe—
the color
of Spirit.
And then,
like magic
I enter
the land
of the
singing.
Through
the crack
that
separates
the worlds,
I step
awkwardly
into a
different
dimension--
the twilight
between
endings
and
beginnings--
where the
world
changes
and my
DNA
rearranges.
I am
Him again,
the drummer
boy,
walking the
wolf trails
of this
ancient land
when the
world
was new
and full
of the
innocence
of man.
It bounces
back there
on my
shoulders
and feels
so
comfortable
so
normal
like I’ve
carried it
so many
times before
in the
long ago.

Continued....

And when
I get
to the top
of the
plateau,
find the
rock
and
sit down
in the
exact spot
where it
has led
me, I
let it
go
cradling it
gently
in my lap
like a child
as I
become wild
again,
beating
on it
with all
my might,
searching
for the
cadence
that
will make
everything
right--
the healing
vibration
that will
make
a nation
divided
whole.

And suddenly,
I know
it’s not
my instrument
at all,
this drum
of elk skin
and
ash wood.
The entire
relationship
between
a drummer
and
a drum
has been
completely
misunderstood.
I am
simply
its carrier,
its stick
holder,
in this
ritual
of old;
and I
have been
called
to serve
the drum.
I am
on
assignment.
Together,
we are
playing
an
important
part
for this
is the
time
of our
planetary
realignment
with the
eternal
beating
of the
ONE
HEART.
