Info about the rug: This
rug is called Bouquet
and was hooked from
entirely recycled fabrics,
mostly fleece jumpers.
Tshirts, silver lurex &
sweatshirts on a hessian
backing. The 'tablecloth'
was hooked from a silky
shirt. It's on my website -
www.yessy.com/ragrugs
About me: I'm an ex Londoner, living and working on beautiful
Waiheke Island in New Zealand (population around 7000,
slight culture shock....)
I've been making rugs/wallhangings for about 8 years now,
using recycled clothing and fabric (preferably Armani but
nobody's donated any yet....) selling from my studio as well as
other stores & the Waheke art gallery. I use clothing that
would end up in the landfill because I'm able to cut out the
damaged bits and cut the good parts into strips to hook
through the backing.
My work is in many parts of the States, Australia, Japan,
Europe, Scandinavia, China and all over the UK - even
Nigeria, when I had a visit to my studio from a wonderful man
who was in New Zealand studying alternative technologies.
He spoke very little English but was mad about colour, the
brighter the better (he fell in love with Nikau II on the website).
I'm passionate about recycling (can you tell?!), every work is
unique and although I repeat popular designs, because of the
nature of the materials I use, I can never faithfully reproduce
the exact colours or texture, all part of the magic for me.
There's always an element of surprise when I take the work off
the frame & see it in full for the first time.
