Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) became one of the first two men to reach the top of Mt Everest and return. On 29 May 1953, he and Nepalese Sherpa
tribesman Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of the 29,028 foot (8,848 metres). Hillary wrote his account of the 1953 climb in High Adventure.
