NAMI does in fact promote specific drugs - see here: http://www.furiousseasons.com/archives/2006/12/nami_touts_new_atypical.html

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is under scrutiny from U.S. Sen. Charles E. Grassley, an Iowa Republican who
targets drug companies' influence on medical practice.
Bloomberg News reported this month that Grassley asked NAMI - a nonprofit mental-health advocacy group that
provides a lot of local education, training and support for patients and families affected by mental illness - to disclose
any financial backing from drug companies or foundations the companies create. Previously, his attention has been
focused on psychiatrists and other physicians who prescribe anti psychotic drugs.
Some doctors have drawn criticism for writing about and researching drugs for companies that pay them consulting
fees, particularly if they don't disclose the connection when publishing or speaking to other doctors.
Medical groups are taking steps to either distance themselves from pharmaceutical companies or be more transparent
about connections.
There's a difference between those situations and an advocacy group like NAMI.
NAMI provides support and education. It doesn't promote specific drugs, said Cathy Hatch, executive director for NAMI
Polk.
It tells people with mental illnesses to follow their physicians' advice and not to discontinue prescribed drugs without
checking with their doctors.
Pharmaceutical groups do provide some funding for NAMI educational programs. I've seen agendas or brochures thank
them for being corporate sponsors. Online information for exhibitors at NAMI's upcoming July national convention lists
pharmaceutical companies along with health facilities, treatment providers, insurance companies and others among
those who can exhibit there.
But Polk County's Hatch feels the group has sufficient guidelines to avoid conflict of interest.
"Why shouldn't drug-company money go full circle and come back to help the patients who take them?" Hatch asked.
