Corruption continues to be exposed thanks to consumer reports and FDA whistleblower diligence as the Center for
Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) Director Dan Schultz resigns this week from the agency amidst
corruption allegations and discussions with the newly appointed FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg, the long
time FDA employee told staff in an Aug. 11 memo.
The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), which is part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), is supposed to ensure that medical devices are safe and effective as authorized by the 1976 Medical
Device Amendments to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. They also exist to help reduce unnecessary
exposure to radiation from medical, occupational, and consumer products as authorized by the Radiation Control
for Health and Safety Act of 1968.
In an attempt to minimize PR fall out on himself and the agency, Schultz, who joined the FDA in 1994, said that they,
(Schultz and the FDA Commissioner), came to a mutual agreement that his resignation; "would be in the best
interest of the center and the agency." But Schultz's resignation does not come as a complete surprise! No, over
the past year Schultz has been under fire from Congress and the public following a series of letters from internal
FDA whistleblowers alleging corruption in the agency.
The whistleblower letters accused Schultz, Office of Device Evaluation, Donna Bea Tillman and other FDA
managers of coercing and intimidating staff into modifying device evaluations, and called for their resignation.
We salute the consumers and whistleblowers who have taken action to ensure that the FDA, a US government
agency that is supposed to be watching out for consumers, is forced to clear itself of existing corruption and
collusion – such activities left unchecked can only lead to disastrous and often fatal results for consumers who
depend on the FDA’s thorough testing and approval of devises and medications they authorize.
