Is it the Man on the battlefield who foolishly rushes into a hail of bullets to take some hill or position he was ordered to do? Is it the Cop or Firefighter that pulls without any thoughts of risk some Woman or Kid from a flaming car wreckage on the freeway? Is it someone who can swim better than some fish and win 8 gold metals in China? No, it is none of these people really. It is the Man that may not be happy with his life and job (as he had much greater dreams and wishes) that gets himself out of bed each day (when he would rather sleep more or do other things) and goes to a job that he really cannot stand with many people there that he may not like, because he has those he loves that depend on him. He puts up with many conditions or situations at this job or in life that he does not like. He dreams of a better life for those he loves and then himself (yet does not know how to make that happen). He keeps many of his upsets to himself so as to not upset others and most of all the ones he loves. He may play some sports to let off some of that pent up steam and anger that bothers him with a life he would like to change, if he only knew how. He may go to a bar to try and kill the pain from an upset in life that he otherwise doesn't know how to deal with fully. He wants a better life for first the others that he loves, and only then himself. He is not sure how to make this happen and may have been mislead by others when he has tried in the past. He may drag himself to work when he feels so bad and in such pain that he is not sure he will live out the day, and yet he tells no one of this as he must be the strong leader for those he loves. Then many years later, he make look back at his life with many regrets of what he could have done instead. His greatest happiness is that he knows he made it possible for the ones he loved to do the things that they needed to and to have a chance for a better life. This is a real hero. He is your father and your husband. He is someone who should be loved and cherished by those whom he loves more than his own life. From a very very old Monk Written by Bill Denton |
