| These are the notes as I was originally working on this project: I'm going to give a sneak preview on the on ideas and some pictures of my current two projects. I came up with the ideas while out of town so they are currently in progress. The first of the two projects will be serving trays made out of strips of exotic wood. There will also be coasters made at the same time so they match. When I say match, the trays and coasters will be made as sets out of the same stock materials. Click here to see the first two trays. There are unique and will never be duplicated. I also have four others in progress. Just so you know, I do 100% of the design and almost 100% of all the labor of cutting, sanding and finishing. (I do, rarely, get help with sanding and finishing.) These items will be unique and exquisite. They will be art! Update 4/23/06 pm: I started on both projects. I am using strips of exotic wood and attaching it to recycled Douglas fir. First, I planned the strips to the same thickness to lessen the sanding. I started off making a panel about 21" by 40". These are pretty well finished except for sanding the coasters. Update 5/9/06 am: I started four new trays and 24 round coasters. A lot of sanding is yet to be done. On the mailboxes, I am using some salvaged packing create materials from a flooring company. I thought it was oak. But today, I started working on the mailbox and used some of this wood. I'm fairly certain it is all mahogany or some type or a wood very similar. I planned down one side to create a good surface to show off the wood. I left the other side rough and some of the pieces display marking that say "Bolivia" and "Savannah." I will put these marking on the inside so they will be preserved. Click here to see these pieces. Pictures added 4/24/06. As further information on the mailboxes, I am using an almost curved roof design by cutting each piece at 15 degrees. So far, it's been fun and enlightening on both projects. Update 5/9/06 am: Progress on the mailbox has been small. I have the body made and am working on the end and opening. New pictures will come shortly. Click here to see these pieces. Pictures added 4/24/06. So for the person who has everything, give them art! They don't have my art pieces yet, at least not all of them! No two will be alike. But I guarantee they will be beautiful and functional. These will be fairly limited items as both, as I am doing them now, are very time consuming. Home |
